From Praise to Rage: Right-wing Response to Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Conservative responses to the partial release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while others expressed frustration over how extensive censorship portray former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.

Administration Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole

Justice Department representatives defended the heavily censored sections with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the censorship procedure.

Questions Prompted by Redactions

While Trump's name and likeness are visible in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt significant concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans immediately called for increased transparency.

“People are raging and disengaging,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.

A Faction of Rightwing Figures Swing In Support of the Disclosure

However, a segment of rightwing pundits and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.

The release—from a DOJ run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely redacted, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.

But some do not, featuring high-profile figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed some rightwing voices to launch the offensive.

“It’s pretty rich how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.

“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”

Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement

Clinton has consistently stated he knew of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been concealing these documents for an extended period only to dump them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.

“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and hide forever. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement concluded.

Overall Conservative Comment Seems Subdued

However, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued after the release, particularly when compared with the loud demands for transparency that preceded the legislative vote to pass a bill requiring the files' release.

Loomer, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a complete release. In February, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were given physical binders of materials that contained no new data.
