Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
